This lab report should be roughly 1000-words. Meeting the length requirement is secondary to including all the sections outlined below. A well-written lab report should be grammatically correct with complete sentences and well-structured paragraphs for each section.
For the Parallax Lab, you are required to write a full, scientific lab report. A full lab report includes the following sections:
IntroductionThe introduction should introduce what parallax is and how astronomers use it. What measurements are required, and how are those measurements used? What does this contribute to our understanding of the universe?
The introduction also should have a clearly stated hypothesis. To help with this, for this lab, your hypothesis should be along the lines of “the method of parallax can be applied to remotely determine distances.” A major goal of the lab report will then be to demonstrate that you can remotely determine distances using parallax.
MethodsDescribe how you set up the experiment to test your hypothesis. Remember that the methods section should include enough detail so that someone else could easily repeat the experiment.
You can assume they have a pre-built parallax measurement device, but you must describe how to it is used to measure parallax in a step-by-step manner
ResultsThis should include a written summary of the results of the parallax experiment. It must include both the physically measured distance and the distances determined by parallax.
Must include a table of your results
May include any figures/graphics you have or create.
DiscussionThis section should discuss how well the parallax determined distances compare with the physically measured distance. How accurate was the parallax method? How precise were your measurements?
Based on the determined distances and their accuracy and precision, do you conclude that parallax is a reliable method to determine distances remotely?
If so, how can that be extended to astronomy?
If not, what do you think explains failing to support the hypothesis (also assume that it did work and answer how can parallax be extended to astronomy).
Summary of Findings/ConclusionsThis section provides a summary of your experiment. It should summarize what you did and what the major findings were.
